Korea - Land of the Morning Calm: Selections of Lyrical Songs: Kagok & Sijo
presented by Peter Duffy (13 April 2003)
Korean music culture has cultivated two distinct lyrical song forms: Kagok and Sijo. During the Koryo Dynasty (918-1392), kagok
(lit. song-piece) lyrical songs were popular music forms with members of the upper classes while the sijo lyrical song forms appeared
a bit later, sometime around the 16th century. Both song forms use classical Korean poetry as text and express a number of different
themes including love of Nature, patriotism, and faithful sincere modes of living. This presentation features selections of kagok, sijo,
and also as a treat one kasa piece, which is a somewhat mysterious song form exhibiting influences from both kagok lyrical songs and
folk music elements.
